What is a Bagpiper?
A bagpiper is a person who can do 3 things:
- Can play a list of tunes by memory on the bagpipe.
- Can learn and develop their own music.
- Can set up and maintain a set of bagpipes
What do I need to start learning to play the bagpipe?
You don’t need a set of bagpipes to start! You need a practice chanter, a method and a teacher to guide you. A Practice Chanter is an instrument resembling a recorder that we played in school. It has a soft sound so that your neighbors won’t be calling the police on you when you are learning to play the bagpipe. You will use the practice chanter forever to develop new music. It’s priced around $75.00.
Can I teach myself to play the bagpipe?
Yes you can! How long are you willing to spend doing that? Most of my students started out teaching themselves and realized that they needed help. The goal is to take lessons for 2 to 5 years and spend the rest of your life enjoying the instrument.
How long does it take to learn to play the bagpipe?
2 to 5 years with help. 10 years or longer on your own if you haven’t burned out by then. It takes a lesson once a week and daily practice to pull this out in 2 to 5 years. Consistency is the key!
How much do bagpipes cost?
Bagpipes Range in price from $300 for a bagpipe made in Pakistan to $10,000 for an Antique Bagpipe played by a famous bagpiper. My average students spends between $1500 and $2500 for their pipes. I tell all of my students to buy a minimum of African Blackwood (better for tuning). The difference in price is fanciness.
Can I learn to read music?
Anyone can learn to read music. Music is a graph. The notes go up and down and different notes are held for certain times. You can do it! What do you have to lose by trying?
How much air does it take?
The bagpipe takes a lot of air, however you will develop your breath using the practice chanter. If you play every day, you will have a chance of play a bagpipe.
